Aviation Contrail Cirrus and Radiative Forcing Over Europe During 6 Months of COVID?19
نویسندگان
چکیده
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a 72% reduction of air traffic over Europe in March–August 2020 compared 2019. Modeled contrail cover declined similarly, and computed mean instantaneous radiative forcing dropped regionally by up 0.7 W m?2. Here, model predictions cirrus optical thickness the top-of-atmosphere outgoing longwave reflected shortwave irradiances are tested comparison Meteosat-SEVIRI-derived data. agreement between observations modeled data is slightly better when contributions included. spatial distributions diurnal cycles differences these 2019 partially caused atmospheric surface conditions, particularly for solar radiation spring 2020. Aviation signals become discernible observed subtracting numerical weather prediction results that approximate atmosphere conditions without contrails.

متن کاملMidlatitude cirrus cloud radiative forcing over China
[1] Midlatitude cirrus cloud radiative forcing (CRF) values at the tropopause over China are estimated using a radiative transfer model initialized by Earth‐orbiting Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) measurements. A derived diurnal mean CRF, solved as a function of solar zenith angle, , though varied over the sola...
متن کاملA case study of the radiative forcing of persistent contrails evolving into contrail-induced cirrus
[1] The radiative forcing due to a distinct pattern of persistent contrails that form into contrail-induced cirrus near and over the UK is investigated in detail for a single case study during March 2009. The development of the contrail-induced cirrus is tracked using a number of high-resolution polar orbiting and lower-resolution geostationary satellite instruments and is found to persist for ...
متن کاملSimulation of the global contrail radiative forcing: A sensitivity analysis
[1] The contrail radiative forcing induced by human aviation activity is one of the most uncertain contributions to climate forcing. An accurate estimation of global contrail radiative forcing is imperative, and the modeling approach is an effective and prominent method to investigate the sensitivity of contrail forcing to various potential factors. We use a simple offline model framework that ...
